I'm glad I revisited the game and was able to approach it for what it was rather than what I might have expected it to be. All kinds of moments made more of an impression on me this time around, such as the creepy mold-ridden Xanadu computer simulation, the ethereal musical performance at the bar, Shannon's discovery deep in the mines (which I'd missed on my first playthrough), and the trip to the distillery that takes a nightmarish turn. I found myself better appreciating the painterly art style and dreamlike ambience. I could more clearly see a coherence in how it explored its tragic themes of everyday people being used and discarded within an unbalanced capitalist system, the degree to which our financial debts control our lives, the search for personal identity, the sense of disillusionment and regret that haunt many of these characters, the idiosyncratic and creative approaches we have for trying to express ourselves and make sense of our existence, and the small gestures and sacrifices we make to help each other get by. Later in the year, I found myself replaying various chapters, and the game began to grow on me as a whole. The surreal touches (apparitions in the basement? Bears in an office building?) so nonchalantly thrown into the mix without explanation may have frustrated me as well. On that first playthrough, I suspect my expectations were a bit thrown off by the story's lack of a traditionally "dramatic" narrative ("The Entertainment" interlude notwithstanding), and that I was a bit confounded by the way in which the dialogue often weaves in a lot of seemingly mundane topics. By the end of Act V, I felt pretty unsatisfied and uncertain what to make of the whole thing. It seemed intermittently interesting and compelling, sometimes tedious, and never really had me hooked.
